Contemporary Art And Its Place In Modern Times

Most famous artists have proven that the old adage about art being a way to immortality is true. So many books and documentaries have been dedicated to the artists who pioneered what we now know as art. Because art can be relative, contemporary art has often become the subject of debate and critical acclaim. But there is a way to distinguish contemporary art, and that is the time line for the creation of the piece. Artists who understood the significance of the movement seized the opportunity to revolutionize artistic creation and become a pioneer of “modern” art.

American Abstraction

Abstract expression gained ground after the war era. One can call abstraction as a movement that artists at that time came up with. It was during this time that New York became known as a place for artists to bloom. If you want to see examples of these pieces, there are several good ones in the California contemporary art museum.

Looking at the list of contemporary artists that have made it in the past, one can see a pattern. Because art was already defined in a way (from the European artists of old), critics have become somewhat jaded when contemporary art came around. Sometimes, it takes one exhibition to make or break a contemporary artist. Usually, the more unique the artist's style is, the more receptive the critics are to his future works. Contemporary art should be something that is unique even to a jaded eye.

In a way, we can say that the artistic community gave birth to and has nurtured the growth of modern art. If a piece that has been created during the post-war era has been recognized by early critics, it usually becomes one of the benchmarks for future contemporary artists. For the reason that most contemporary artists create art as extensions of their emotions, they are more sensitive to the acclaim or rejection by the modern art community.

Future Prospects for Modern Artists

Nowadays, so many struggling artists are still at it because art is a passion for them. The evolution of art has opened up doors for talented people who can really stick to their craft, but this kind of change has made the art community more picky about the artists it supports. Usually, the critics would either rave or nitpick about the technique used, as well as the materials. While art is a form of self expression, many artists are confronted with the challenge of finding their true potential amidst the influences of the early artists they admire. Those who break free from the chains of influence, and create a style that they can truly call their own, succeed because of their tenacious adherence to who they really are.
